The Lawyer’s Toolbox– How to Download SMS Text Messages, Call History Logs, Voicemail and Other data from an iPhone or iPad to a Mac or PC– Review of DiskAid 5 and FileApp Pro

While investigating the practicality of time capture software (e.g., Element 55, Time Builder, Smart Time—to be the subject of a future article), I learned that one of the major holes in all of these programs is the ability to capture history of calls made on the iPhone.  I assumed there would be a large number of third party options that could take care of the phone history capture piece. As it turns out, there are not.  One that can is DiskAid 5  ($24.90  DiskAid is installed on your PC or Mac.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that using DiskAid 5 not only can I export my iPhone4S call history in a table format and it export to a PC or Mac, but I can also transfer all sorts of core iPhone/iPad files and data between my PC and iPhone/iPad as easily as if I was transferring files between two Windows folders.  In fact, DiskAid gives you the ability to easily drag and drop almost any file between your PC/Mac and your iPhone/iPad.  This includes all types of media on your iPhone/iPad including voicemails, SMS Text messages, contacts, audio memos, you name it.  Simply connect your iPad/iPhone to your Mac/PC with a USB cable.  DiskAid will detect your device, and you are off to the races.  [Helpful Hint—I have found that turning off the automatic sync feature of iTunes avoid having stop the sync to use DiskAid].

So how is this useful?  In addition to capturing the phone history, I use DiskAid when I need to load large quantities of documents into an iPad trial presentation application such as TrialPad or ExhibitView or viewer such a GoodReader.  Also, the capability to easily download SMS text messages, phone history, voice mails, photographs and contacts has obvious discovery implications, be that in litigation or just checking up on the iPhone/iPad activities of your teenager.
